Most of us feel a pinch to hire professionals for our little, spontaneous DIY makeover project. Because of that, we would rather choose to take up the challenge to do it ourselves. We understand that it may be daunting if it’s your very first try in DIY home painting. This helpful guide would then run you through three most important pitfalls that can prevent you from a brilliant job that you would be proud of!
Rushing the Prep work
Even before you begin the priming or painting process, do a thorough check on all the surfaces you intend to paint! You will want to take some time to do this because these defects will stick out like a sore thumb once you have the new paint job done!
What can you do: Use a strong flashlight held from the side of the wall. Sand or patch imperfections before applying a coat of primer or paint.
Painting out of a can
Never paint out of your can, get a separate small container to manage the paint. Painting out of a can exposes your paint to air which can dry them up at a faster rate. Not only that, brushes/rollers you use will pick up unwanted debris as you paint which will then be deposited back into the source can, causing lumps and bits in your paint.
What can you do: Pour in only 0.5in of paint at a time into the separate container to refresh your paint often and ensure the consistency of your paint.
Storing paint incorrectly
Storing your paint incorrectly will prevent your paint from performing like new. Air dries up your paint and thickens them, this is what causes the obvious brush marks if you don’t keep them properly.
What you can do: Cap your source can immediately after pouring an amount of 0.5in each time. Before capping, blow into the container to introduce the carbon dioxide gas in your breath to reduce the oxygen level in the source can to prevent your paint from skinning over.
